Cannonball Run

September 16th, 2008

The Scooter Cannonball Run 2008 is going on right now, and it is probably the coolest scooter event in the country.  Inspired by the classic 1981 movie, 28 riders are racing scooters cross country on Highway 50 from San Francisco to Ocean City Maryland.  They are riding over 3000 miles in 10 days.  Two of the (only three) riders on manual transmission bikes are our neighbors Roy and Rocket from the Vancouver area.  Be sure to check out http://www.scootercannonball.com/ to follow the progress of all the riders and http://royscannonball.wordpress.com/ for Roy and Rocket’s daily reflections on their ride.  Good luck guys!

Thanks

July 28th, 2008

The Hamster Run has come and gone, and the hamster has survived another year.  The SOBs would like to extend a big thank you to everyone who came to hang out with us for the weekend.  Another big thank you goes to Jeff and Mary for hosting campers and a big ol’ BBQ, and everyone else who put in time, money, and sweat into helping organize and execute the rally (there are too many of you to list).  Finally, a thank you to our fine sponsors for putting up cash and goods to make this event work financially.  This thing keeps growing, we counted 82 scooters riding Saturday and 34 riding Sunday, with no breakdowns or crashes.

Those of you who took some pictures there (and I imagine that’s most of you), please take a minute to upload them to the rally gallery at scoot.net so that we can all share them.

One of the northwest’s best rallies is coming up this weekend, and the weather is actually looking promising for once!  It’s not too late to plan on going if you haven’t yet, nor is it too late to start working on your moustache, so get on it!  Contact ToddQ or Dorcie if you’re interested in joining a group riding over on Friday.

Club Membership Changes

March 28th, 2008

The club leadership recently met to review the club membership guidelines, and decided it was time to make a few changes to maintain consistency with the direction the club has taken since they were drafted.  The overall effect is that they’ve been simplified and relaxed, making the club more open.  The new membership page can be viewed here for the time being until a more permanent link is established on this site.

End of summer news update

September 17th, 2007

Things have been a little quiet here lately, but here’s what’s coming up. We’re finally rolling out a new mailing list to help keep people updated on club news and events. If you’ve been getting emails from the club or were a Yahoo Groups member, you should have gotten an email notifying you that you’ve been signed up. If not, visit the Discussion List page for info in signing up.

We’ve been talking about doing some club events in the near future, such as and end of summer bbq, and some sort of tech seminar (or even series) on doing some basic maintenance on a Vespa. Stay tuned for more details, or chime in on the new mailing list if you’ve got more ideas. We’d also like to start delegating the planning and leading of rides amongst more members, it’s a good experience, so don’t be surprised if you get tapped on the shoulder over the next couple of months and asked to help out.

There will be at least one more mid-week evening ride this summer before it gets too dark and wet, Wednesday, Septemper 19. We’ll leave from Boundary Bay as usual, 5:30pm, and try to gas up before hand.

Hamster Run II

July 30th, 2007

Thanks to everyone who turned out to ride with us and made our second rally another success!  We had a great time this weekend and hope you did too.  We had around 70 scoots riding on Saturday afternoon, Bellingham had never seen anything quite like it before.  Those of you with digital pictures from the weekend (everyone but Jeff), head on over to scoot.net and upload them for everyone to enjoy (we’re still working on someplace to put Poloroids up).  Mark your calendars now for next year, it’s only going to get better as we figure this thing out.
